Warzone Inspired Scene: Created In 10 Days

This scene is inspired by a photograph of an old Gangnam Style Apartment Complex from South Korea. Coupled with my love for Call of Duty Warzone, I decided to give this scene a story through the lens of the Call of Duty world.

My initial challenge was accurately representing the scale of the buildings and its compartmentalized structure. Essentially, the whole complex is built up of four major modular components , which can be seen in the Modularity slideshow. After identifying these modular parts I tackled the scale of one portion to determine the rest. I looked up South Korean building standards and dimensions of lobbys, Gangnam Style apartments, staircase widths, and ceiling heights from the late 20th century to build my first piece. From there it was easy to determine the rest.

Initially I wanted to render this scene in Blender, but it became too heavy for the program when I began set dressing and had to move it all to Unreal Engine to continue the project. Thankfully, Unreal is an incredibly powerful engine and it could sustain all the high poly LODs from Quixel's Megascan Library and my 4k Textures which I created in Substance Painter.

It wouldn't be much of a Warzone scene without a Loudout Drop to get that win! This prop took me about a day to complete as I struggled a bit with modeling the fabric netting around the main body. I tried to create it using Blender's cloth simulation but it was extremely difficult to achieve a high poly mesh that was stable enough to be baked onto a low poly version. Subsequently, I made use of Blender's sculpting engine to fold, grab and extrude the netting to make it look more like a heavy fabric.
